American Health Lawyers Assoc. to Discuss Employer On-Site Clinics at Luncheon Meeting in Chicago

The American Health Lawyers Association has a meeting scheduled in Chicago in November of this year, the “Payors, Plans, and Managed Care Law Institute.”   This will include multiple sessions over two days.  One of those sessions will focus on “Employer On-Site Clinics as Medical Homes.”   The description states that “Employer on-site clinics are a new and hot area of growth.”  (Emphasis added)

I’m not sure why this group thinks this is a “new and hot” growth area; they should talk to some of the employers who have been doing this for literally years, some even for a decade or more.   This isn’t new; it is just that with all the media focus on healthcare costs, healthcare reform, and the recession, it is finally getting attention in other arenas.   It is interesting that they are co-presenting with Richard Luceri, M.D.  of JM Family Enterprises.  As many followers of this site and of our newsletter know,   Dr. Luceri is a veteran of on-site programming and developed one of the nation’s first programs.  His participation is one good reason to attend this session.

We’ve always known that legal analysis when you set-up an on-site clinic is imperative (see our tab, “Consultants”):   analysis by attorneys who are familiar with on-site clinics and their operations and goals, and analysis by those familiar with the laws not just nationally but in your state that might impact the way in which you organize and provide services.   This luncheon meeting will be enlightening, we’re sure.   As technology and health reform continuously impact all of us in many ways (including regulations), there will be a need to educate all the players about those changes and their consequences.  Meetings like this will help to provide that education and awareness among attorneys who are then better prepared to assist their clients with these types of projects.
