Patient Registry on Steroids

rollodexPopulation health management calls for a comprehensive patient registry, something you can’t do on an old-fashioned rolodex.  Those companies fortunate and forward-thinking enough to have started an on-site clinic years ago, now probably have massive electronic patient registries, but nothing that will compare with the database that the AHRQ is building.  It will be the RoPR – the Registry of Patient Registries.  This new registry has a list of 63 others on it, thus far, with more to come in the future, for sure.

There will be problems with the registry, like terminology – the use of specific terms in some studies may be entirely differently defined in another.  But, long term, this could be the beginning of the compilation and standardization of data collection on health management that eventually allows caregivers to access information that would otherwise have only been available in scientific journals long after the research was done.
