NY Hospitals are “in the game”

The most powerful and influential medical system in NY State is now in the on-site game.  As reported by Crain’s Health Pulse last week, North Shore-LIJ “sees the need for workplace docs.”  The article covered a service that they are providing for employees of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and it outlined a new venture that North Shore-LIJ “hopes to replicate” throughout its growing network.  The site at Cold Springs has been named the Health and Wellness Center at CSHL.

North Shore-LIJ has a new department of “population health” and the Crain’s article reported that they have hired three occupational health physicians with Dr. Jacqueline Moline heading the new department.  Like any hospital initiative with capacity, it will be looking for new clients and customers and it will have a real presence in Manhattan with its recent acquisition of Lenox Hill Hospital on the East Side and a takeover of St. Vincent’s facilities on the West Side.  Some of the regular vendors of Manhattan-based on-site programming should be looking over their shoulders.

We also know that the North Shore system has capital and talent and that it is not afraid to innovate.  With the present site and a laboratory of 1,000 employees at CSHL, they will be formidable competition when they begin to understand how this all works.  Also quoted in the article by Barbara Benson, Editor of Crain’s Health Pulse, is a comment by a spokesperson from Montefiore. This reflects an interesting observation of one giant market leader commenting upon the initiatives of another.  It is exactly the environment that employers, if they are listening, should be contemplating.  If there is one health care system out there that wants to provide services for us, might there be two?

The answer, obviously, is ‘yes.’  For all of the vendors out there eyeing the NY marketplace, you might consider what happens on the dance floor when the elephants polka.  (Answer – the rest of the animals get out of the way.)  North Shore-LIJ – Welcome to the vendor ranks!
