Speaking of Hospital Costs and Surgery
We just published a reference to an article in Becker’s Hospital Review comparing medical versus surgical inpatient admissions and costs. Soooo – we thought you might also be interested in a brief article published on the DallasNews web site about elective surgery volume (using data for Medicare patients) by geographic area. It shows exactly what you probably already knew, that where you live (and the physicians in that area) may significantly impact whether elective surgery is chosen. The DallasNews article actually gives some tips to patients about how to approach the decision to have the surgery – or choose a treatment that is less invasive, potentially equally effective, and less costly.
The article references many sources, but one is the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy which has extensive data by region that you can review to see how your geographic area compares to others, perhaps giving you also some insight into your healthcare costs.
