CMS and On-Site Clinics

I think this may be a subtle turning point in on-site clinic recognition.  CMS just announced in its on-going publication, MLN Matters, that they are adding a new place of service code for Place of Employment/Worksite.  To quote the document, this new POS code (“18”) is “a location, not described by any other POS code, owned or operated by a public or private entity where the patient is employed, and where a health professional provides on-going or episodic occupational medicine, therapeutic, or rehabilitative services to the individual.”

We know that most of you are not billing any governmental programs, but this designation by the federal government of a new POS code for employer-owned sites is a step we didn’t see coming and, we believe, recognition at the national level  that health services provided in the workplace are here to stay.
